It's hard to imagine when it's in the
90s that only a few months before it seemed like winter would never end. On March 20th, the first day of spring, the hills
of Bedford were still brown, begging for signs of life on the barren landscape. Depression is a lot like winter when the signs
of spring's vitality need to be seen before they are believed. Men and Depression was the topic of this
year's Fountain House Symposium and Luncheon, which Board member and institute graduate Robin Sedgewick and I attended,
where a CEO of a Fortune 500 Company and a State Senator gave testimony to their own battles with depression. It's sad that we accept physical illness as a natural part of life while mental illness still carries judgments that
often exacerbate the symptoms. The problem may lie in our extreme associations to the word illness itself. There are major
illnesses and minor ones, lifethreatening ones and those that are not. But some of us who had many colds and illnesses
in childhood were called "sickly" just as there are some who behave out of the ordinary and are called "crazy".
The Westchester Institute Treatment Services provides psychotherapy for those seeking understanding
as well as relief from the burdens of life and the illnesses that may befall or threaten our emotional and mental wellbeing
and peace of mind. Not all who seek treatment are the ones suffering the illness. Many who come into treatment have lived
with someone who suffers debilitating illnesses. Whether they are a parent, a sibling, a partner or a spouse, they are our
loved ones. Whether we are suffering our own depression, anxiety or any other form of suffering or are in
a relationship with someone who is, therapy can help us relate better and have more satisfying relationships by offering us
alternative communication skills. Call our Treatment Services today at (914) 666-0163 and find out how we can help provide
affordable therapy for you and your loved ones. Best wishes, Rob
